FUNCTIONAL GROUPS
Halide: Halogen bonded to a carbon atom (Example: Fluoride, Chloride, Bromide, Iodide)
Alcohol: An “O-H” bonded to a carbon atom. End in “-ol”. (alcohols are polar!) (Example: Methanol, Ethanol, propanol, butanol)
Org. Acid/Carboxylic Acids: “COOH” bonded to the end of a Carbon chain, the “H” disassociate to make the molecule acidic. End in “-ic acid” (Ex: Formic Acid, Acetic Acid
Amines: “NH2” is bonded to a carbon atom. End in “-amine” (and are basic!) (Ex: Methamine, Ethamine)
Aldehydes: “C=O” is bonded to the END of the carbon chain. Ends in “-aldehyde” (Example: Formaldehyde, acetaldehyde)
Ketones: “C=O” bonded to the carbon chain, NOT TO A TERMINAL CARBON”. Ends in “-one” (Ex: Acetone, hexone)
Ethers: “O” links two hydrocarbon chains. Ends in “-ether” (example: dimethyl ether, diethyl ether)
Esters: Ketone + Ether = Ester. Ends in “-ate”. (Example: Methyl formate)
